A solar shower lets you enjoy free hot water all summer long — and installing one yourself is entirely doable without calling a plumber. This guide walks you through every step, from choosing the right location to connection, anchoring, and maintenance.

Where to Place Your Solar Shower

Maximize Sun Exposure

Choose a south-facing, shade-free location with several hours of direct sun daily. Even slight shade noticeably reduces performance. Observe your backyard at different times to identify overly shaded zones. Avoid placing the shower near large trees. Water temperature peaks between 12 PM and 3 PM.

Proximity to Pool and Water Source

Install within ~6.5 ft (2 m) of the pool for practical daily use and minimal water marks. Locate the nearest outdoor tap to keep the garden hose connection short — long distances reduce pressure. The ground between water source and shower should slope slightly toward the outlet to prevent puddles.

Ground Preparation

The ground must be flat and stable enough to support a full tank. If soft, plan a concrete slab or use a dedicated base. Slope slightly for drainage. Minimum clear height: 6.5 ft (2 m) for comfortable use. Options:

• Concrete slab: maximum stability, long-lasting but requires drying time.

Step 2 — Assemble the Structure

Unpack and inspect all components thoroughly. Assemble adjustable feet first to create a stable base. Position the column perfectly vertical using a spirit level. Install the mixer tap and shower head without forcing any connections.

Step 3 — Anchor to the Ground

Use A4 stainless steel lag bolts for corrosion resistance. On concrete: 10 mm lag bolts with appropriate anchors. On wood: 12 mm screws driven deeply. Maintain ~32 inches (80 cm) between fastening points for good force distribution. Tighten firmly without over-torquing. After fastening: verify structure is flat, stable, and perfectly vertical. Apply a gentle push test — no movement allowed.

Step 4 — Connect and Test

Connect the garden hose to the base column using a quick or threaded connector. Apply Teflon tape (2 clockwise turns) to all threaded connections. Add a shut-off valve after the tap to simplify seasonal draining. Let water run for a few moments to purge air and impurities. Run for at least 10 minutes and check for any moisture — gently tighten if needed. Wait 5 more minutes to confirm zero leaks.

Connection, Drainage, and Maintenance

Wastewater Drainage

Direct the drainage pipe toward a drain or storm sewer with a 1% slope to prevent stagnant water. Maintain a few meters between tank and drain for good thermal pressure. A siphon can be added for complete seasonal draining. Proper drainage is especially critical before winter to prevent freezing.

Commissioning and Temperature

Fill the tank in the morning for maximum afternoon heat. Maximum temperature is typically reached around midday. Open the mixer tap to test flow and check for leaks. Maintenance and Winter Protection

• After each use: rinse with clean water to limit limescale buildup.
• Monthly: clean tank and shower head with mild soap.
